Travelocity Releases Memorial Day Booking Barometer

Data Analysis Helps Identify Best Booking Windows for Memorial Day Flights

SOUTHLAKE, Texas – April 16, 2012 – Travelocity today released its annual Travel Booking Barometer for Memorial Day 2012 with the data showing that now through April 18 – approximately six weeks before the holiday weekend – is one of two sweet spots for travelers to get the best price on Memorial Day weekend airfare.

Travelocity data shows that the average price for Memorial Day weekend domestic airfare booked during that six-day window is $299 roundtrip. The other sweet spot Travelocity identified for booking Memorial Day travel is April 26 – May 2, approximately four weeks before the holiday weekend. During this booking window, the average price for Memorial Day weekend airfare is $298 roundtrip.

“The Travelocity Travel Booking Barometer for Memorial Day suggests that the price to beat for Memorial Day weekend flights is right around $300 roundtrip,” said Courtney Scott, Travelocity’s senior editor. “And the good news for travelers is that there is still time to score a deal on flights for Memorial Day weekend, but time is running out.”

Travelocity analyzed five years (2007 – 2011) of its airfare booking data to base its conclusions for the Memorial Day Travel Booking Barometer.  Beginning six weeks before the holiday, the booking barometer looks at the average domestic airfare for travel Memorial Day weekend (Friday – Monday) and how the prices change depending on what week travelers book.

The Travelocity Travel Booking Barometer data shows that, historically, airfare booked approximately six weeks in advance of the Memorial Day weekend has been cheaper even than airfare booked seven weeks or more in advance. Airfare booked afterward has historically risen and then remained relatively flat until two weeks prior to the holiday weekend when there has been an upward spike.
